Welcome to the website of Fraser
Wilson B.Mus (Hons) ARCO
Teacher, conductor, composer, performer
Director
of Music at Saint Bartholomew's, Clyde Road, Dublin
A former organ scholar of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin,
Fraser is now Director of Music of Saint Bartholomew's, Clyde Road, Dublin.
He grew up in Norfolk and was educated at Norwich School and has worked in churches
in Scotland, East Anglia and Sheffield. He is a choir
trainer of ever-increasing experience and inventiveness, and he
delights in bringing the best out of singers and (particularly in a
liturgical context) encouraging them, in the words of the motto of the
Royal School of Church Music, to sing "with the spirit and with the understanding also".
He particularly enjoys leading workshops and rehearsal days, and is
passionate about bringing music to as wide an audience as possible
(particularly the younger generation) in an accessible and inspiring way.
Fraser has a first-class Honours degree in music from the
University of Sheffield, during which he specialised in composition. In
addition to his work in Dublin, he also founded and directs the Rivelin
Singers, a chamber choir which has sung highly successful weeks in Chester
and Norwich cathedrals; a commercial recording of contemporary music awaits
in 2011!
Fraser's continually expanding catalogue of compositions includes
many works for the church (mostly written under his liturgical pseudonym Peter
Macintosh) and a smaller number for the concert hall, and he responds gladly
to commissions. Among his most recent works are a dramatic setting of the
Reproaches for the Good Friday liturgy at Saint Matthew's in Sheffield, a Song of the Midnight Hour (for
Midnight Mass) and two sets of evening canticles for Saint Bartholomew’s,
and a further set of canticles commissioned by an English church choir. He
is currently working on the final movement of his Concerto for piano and string
orchestra and an Irish-language carol
arrangement, and is contemplating a number of other items!
Fraser is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists
(and faintly aspires to becoming a Fellow, if he can ever find time to put
in the work!). He has particular interests in Bach and contemporary organ
music and in improvisation. Decidedly a liturgical rather than a concert
organist, he lists accompaniment and
playing for services among his favourite pastimes. He is also an
increasingly experienced teacher. Since arriving in Dublin, he has formed
and developed close links with a number of schools and other educational
establishments, and with musicians and groups across the city.
Away from music, Fraser is a keen cook and enjoys reading, walking
and culture of all kinds. Having run the Loch Ness Marathon last year, he
is now on the lookout for a marathon with a totally flat course before
attempting a second! He is also a footballer and a fan of Norwich City FC –
usually a frustrating pursuit but, following their recent promotion to the
Championship, at the moment quite an exciting one!
You are very welcome to explore this website. You will find
information about Fraser's career and work and various other things that
may be of interest. In particular you may wish to download the composition
samples. Do feel free to get in touch if
you would like to book Fraser for an engagement, if you wish to discuss a
commission, or if you have any other questions.
